A non-agricultural but important activity was salt making. Pa'akai was produced in salt beds lining the shore of Kaho'onapua'a Bay, present sites of the Kiahuna Plantation, Plantation Gardens Restaurant and the Sheraton Kaua'i Resort.

Salt was an important food preservative used by Hawaiians. It was also desired and traded for with haole ships victualing at Hanaka'ape Bay.
