Because of the critical need for irrigated land here, habitations in the field system were located in unproductive areas around fields. Settlement was dispersed rather than concentrated. Individual house sites were located as near as possible to fields.

This concept is called cluster development today. Homesites were clustered in the non-productive portions so that use of the productive portions could be maximized.
